Going Carbon Neutral

The way we have gone about going carbon neutral this year is by offsetting our carbon foot print using a project certified by Gold Standard.

Fortunately for us our product is a natural product that absorbs carbon in its own right. However overall, we still have a carbon deficit. Seeing as how many people are trying to improve how we treat our environment we thought we should do our part for the planet and our communities and make a concerted effort too. So to answer the question why? We think it’s the right thing to do.

Carbon offsetting, does it work?

Carbon offsetting in many instances does not work or forward the reduction in global warming. Fortunately, if done properly with research and a genuine want to make a difference not just a tick box marketing exercise then it does work. Is our solution perfect? No, but we’ve done our best and are very happy with the result and believe this will make a genuine difference on our small scale. Of course, any suggestions on how to improve are always welcome.

What we have done:

  1. Find a project certified by Gold Standard that we believe delivers on carbon offsetting as well as helping local communities, we chose ·        Utsil Naj – healthy homes for all in Mexico

  • Why gold standard? Appropriately named it is the standard that others follow due to there stringent criteria. For information on their standards please click here.

Why this specific project?

  • It helps reduce carbon emissions as large amounts of timber are burned in open fires for cooking in Mexico. Simply put by them using efficient stoves less wood needs to burned.

  • Huge amounts of health issues and many deaths world wide are attributed to the daily inhalation of smoke from open fires used to cook on, especially in women and children. These efficient stoves reduce the risks of serious respiratory diseases

  • The production of the stoves also provides employment for the local smiths. For the full information please click here.

2. We need to figure out how much carbon our business produces by adding up all the aspects of our business that create carbon. You can view our calculations here.
